though she has regular contact with little Prudence. (It's political.) Alexia isn't pleased, but finally agrees to the deal. Baby as Payment: In order to end the attempts on (then-pregnant) Alexia's life, her husband and Lord Akeldama agree that the baby will be adopted and raised by Akeldama. The former definitely crosses over into Sigil Spam territory, and the two collide rather spectacularly in Timeless, with the giant octopus in the sands of Egypt, formed out of preternatural mummies. Arc Symbol: The brass octopus, and cephalopods in general.Under normal conditions Alexia could turn a werewolf human by touching him through clothes, but she can hug a werewolf when in wolf form as long as both are swimming. Both effects work postmortem if the body is preserved, and age, such as mummification, increases both the anti-magic effect and the repellent effect. They're so rare that Alexia had never met another one until she was an adult so she just never had the chance to find out. Preternaturals repel each other, almost with physical force. All that is a matter of common knowledge at the start of the series over the course of it, several more details are discovered. When a preternatural touches the corpse of a ghost, the ghost is immediately exorcised. When a preternatural touches a vampire or werewolf, they temporarily become human, losing all the unusual physical features, abilities, and weaknesses until contact is broken.Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Alexia's mother and stepfather. Adaptation Distillation: The manga volumes stay faithful to the novels, but nonetheless manage to distill the best elements of them into a visual medium.Lord Akeldama overcame the vampire aversion to citrus so that he could use lemon juice on his hair. Acquired Poison Immunity: A mild example.Action Girl: Neither Alexia nor Madame Lefoux shy away from kicking ass.Lord Akeldama is also shown to be a skilled fighter since he a lone vampire and one of the oldest vampires in the series. Alexia notes that their fine clothing is cut to hide their musculature. Action Fashionista: Lord Akeldama's band of dandies are quite handy during the Hipocras club debacle.Gail Carriger has also written several stand-alone novellas in the same universe about side characters from the other books, collectively titled the Supernatural Society Novellas. A four-book sequel series called The Custard Protocol has also been published. Gail Carriger has also written The Finishing School Series, aimed at Young Adult readers, set in the same universe 25 years earlier and featuring a few characters from The Parasol Protectorate. The series is being given a manga adaptation by Yen Press. These adventures include custom-made weaponised parasols, rogue scientists, dirigibles and 'glassicles'. The books concentrate on the adventures of Alexia Tarrabotti, a 'plain', sometimes scandalous, half-Italian 'Preternatural' who has the ability to negate supernatural abilities by touch Lord Conall Maccon, Scottish werewolf and pack Alpha, and their friends and colleagues. In the world of the Parasol Protectorate, not only are vampires, werewolves and ghosts real, but they are instrumental in British politics, fashion and scientific advancement. It is primarily a Supernatural Adventure Romance, set in an alternate Victorian London with heavy steampunk elements. The Parasol Protectorate is a series of books by author Gail Carriger.

At the same time, she challenges other writers to more closely examine typical literary convention. She defined the artist, in part, as "the guardian of the moral and ethical sense of the community." In "Happy Endings," Atwood fulfills this role with a challenge that she throws out to those writers who rely on the stereotypical characterization of men and women and to the reader who accepts such gender typing. In earlier works, including the novel Bodily Harm, as well as speeches, Atwood discusses the writer's relationship to society. In her short story, Canadian writer Margaret Atwood rebuts the idea of happy endings in fiction and life, since the. In several thumbnail sketches of different marriages, all of which achieve a traditional "happy ending," Atwood references both the mechanics of writing, most particularly plot, and the effects of gender stereotyping. The only happy ending is the absence of it. "Happy Endings," which is essentially a self-referential story framework, falls into the third category. lt was not quite a condensation, a commentary, a questionnaire, and it missed being a parable, a. lt was not a poem, a short story, or a prose poem. Atwood has spoken on the story saying, 'l did not know what sort of creature it was. This gives readers six scenarios, and one ending. Subtitled "Short Fiction and Prose Poems," Murder in the Dark featured four types of works: autobiographical sketches, travel notes, experimental pieces addressing the nature of writing, and short pieces dealing with typical Atwood themes, notably the relationship between the sexes. 'Happy Endings' is a short story by Margaret Atwood. They both have good jobs and buy a nice house, and in time, they have children. In the first one, labelled ‘A’, John and Mary meet and fall in love and get married. Margaret Atwood's "Happy Endings" first appeared in the 1983 Canadian collection, Murder in the Dark, and it was published in 1994 for American audiences in Good Bones and Simple Murders. The story is divided into eight sections, the first six of which posit six different storylines. They refer to vehicles on the automotive market in Germany. In other words, you can achieve a lot of what you might use Spaces for, without having to switch between spaces or manage which applications show in which spaces. Enabling single-application mode means that you can quickly and easily build a custom list of visible applications, and that list is dynamic. If you think about this for a minute, you’ll start to see the possibilities. If you later want to hide Safari again, click Mail’s Dock icon (or just Option-click on Mail’s window). Click Mail in the Dock, then use Command-Tab to switch to Safari, and you’ll end up with both Mail and Safari on screen, and nothing else. You can thus combine methods of switching between applications. However, if you switch applications through any other method, including clicking another visible application’s window and the Command-Tab application switcher, Mac OS X’s normal multi-application approach remains in effect, and nothing will be hidden. This means that if you click an application’s icon in the Dock, it immediately hides all the other applications, including the Finder. The most important fact to realize is that single-application mode is tied exclusively to the Dock. Although it was always intended as a simple option for people who are not computer experts, it turns out to be an interesting option for the power user. That’s right, the original single-application mode in pre-release versions of Mac OS X is still with us. (Go ahead and try it – it’s easily reversed.)ĭefaults write single-app -bool trueįor single-application mode to take effect, you have to relaunch the Dock with this second command. Lurking in the scary bowels of Mac OS X for all these years has been this little command, which brings back single-application mode. When an application needs a second window, such as for keywords or editing in iPhoto, it is generally a palette that disappears when the application is not in the foreground.īut it goes further. Single-application mode is how the iPhone works, of course, and on the Mac, almost all Apple applications – think about Mail, iTunes, and iPhoto – rely on a single window that can easily take over the entire screen. This interface behavior isn’t new in Snow Leopard, of course, but it’s an example of how Apple has never really given up the desire to make users focus on a single application at a time. As a result, people who are starting to use the Dock seriously for the first time are discovering that clicking an icon in the Dock brings all its windows to the foreground. In Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, Apple has made significant improvements to the Dock, including improved Expose integration and minimizing windows invisibly, among much else. Mac OS X’s multi-application mode differed from how previous versions of the Mac OS worked in that it interleaved all open windows without regard to which application they belonged to, a feature that annoyed a lot of long-time Mac users. This was intended to be the default behavior, but it was so widely reviled that Apple quickly changed the default to the familiar multi-application mode that shows multiple applications on the screen at the same time. Having returned from an archeological dig into the dark history of Mac OS X, I’ve unearthed a feature that could change the way you interact with your applications, enabling you to focus on one or two more easily than in the past.īack in 1999, when Steve Jobs first showed off the new Finder in Mac OS X, it ran in a single-application mode, where switching from one application to another caused the first application to minimize (this was the original demo of the Genie effect). #1683: New M3 chips in updated MacBook Pros and iMac, record Apple Q4 profits on lower revenues, no more 27-inch iMacs.#1684: OS bug fix releases, Finder tag poll results, Messages identity verification, blocking spambots, which Apple services do you use?.#1685: Hidden secrets of the Fn key, Emergency SOS via satellite free access extended, RCS support in Messages, Rogue Amoeba icon evolution.#1686: Please support TidBITS, OS security updates, Apple services poll results, biking with an iPhone.#1687: Feature-rich OS updates, recovering from a crashing bug in Contacts, Zoom for Apple TV, how much do you use widgets?. That’s the most equivalent (if not a perfect alignment) to a mid-level Trailblazer LT model, which starts at $23,700 - a much more modest price difference. However, since Buick is positioned as a premium brand, the Encore GX also has a lot of standard equipment that’s missing from the entry-level Trailblazer models: automatic climate control, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a six-speaker stereo, keyless entry with push-button starting, and 18-inch alloy wheels. It starts at just $19,000 for the base L model, compared with $24,200 for the cheapest Encore GX Preferred. The Trailblazer stations itself as the runaway leader in value for the money. Keep reading to learn how the two crossovers differ across eight categories - and where they don’t - and then see our overall winner. We tested both vehicles to help you choose between them. (Don’t confuse the Encore GX with the Buick Encore, a twin to the old Chevy Trax.) The Trailblazer costs less, but the Encore GX has other advantages. The two vehicles don’t look much alike, but these corporate cousins share the same engines and other mechanical underpinnings. It’s also roomier than most of its competitors.īut before you buy a new 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer, there’s a key competitor to consider: the 2021 Buick Encore GX. Like the rest of its segment, today’s Trailblazer offers good gas mileage and easy maneuverability at reasonable prices. Chevy revived the name for its newest crossover, a light-duty subcompact that slots just above the slightly smaller, slightly cheaper, much older Chevrolet Trax. The first Chevrolet Trailblazer was a big, rugged, traditional SUV with clumsy handling and lousy gas mileage. 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer Activ ・ Photo by Brady Holt What is confirmed about Adira is that they are Senna Tal: well, sort of, it turns out they’re a Trill like Dax in Deep Space Nine, and that they inherited the symbiont that was bonded to Tal after he died. What’s curious is that Tilly and Stamets consistently refer to the character as “she” and “her,” indicating Barrio isn’t playing a non-binary character too: this feels strange, given how CBS trumpeted their casting, and if they are playing one, then Tilly and Stamets ought to know better than to assume their gender (they’re from the 23rd century, not the 21st). The episode introduces UEDF inspector Adira, who is played by non-binary actor Blu del Barrio. Wen reveals disaster had befallen the colonies on Titan, but every attempt to reach Earth was met with violence - basically, Earth became so cut off from the rest of the galaxy that they were firing on their own indigenous people: it’s an important reminder that when we close ourselves to others, we also hurt ourselves, because we are all ultimately part of the same family. Georgiou - in characteristically brusque fashion - unmasks Wen, revealing him not to be an alien invader as was believed, but a human colonist from the moon of Titan. (He and Georgiou also have to wear Starfleet uniforms, something he complains gives him a rash.) When Saru makes contact with the United Earth Defense Force, he claims they’re a Federation ship that’s been away in deep space for generations (they’re the descendants of the original crew, he says), and it’s strange he keeps up the charade even when the dilithium raiders they sought to avoid show up - honesty always ought to be the best option, especially if your ship is going to be the one trying to uphold the Federation’s ideals when a fight breaks out.īooker and Burnham go off-book, and use the dilithium to draw out and capture the raiders’ leader, Wen (Christopher Heyerdahl), breaking the rules, but forcing him and the UEDF’s Captain Ndoye (Phumzile Sitole) to put down their weapons and have a mature discussion. By the end, Burnham accepts Saru’s offer to be his first officer, but as her long hair combined with her old uniform shows, she now has an independent streak that’s simply not going to fade away.īurnham’s time as courier means she’s learned a thing or two about how to be wily the Discovery needs to approach Earth without causing too much suspicion, so she and Booker hide most of the ship’s dilithium on his cloaked vessel. In the ready room, he and Burnham talk about how she now finds it difficult to dedicate herself to something that no longer (de facto) exists likewise, many of the crew are wary of whether they can trust Booker or not. It’s a wonderful moment - Saru’s been acting captain so many times he’s certainly earned it - but he can sense something’s off. During the reunion, we see how much her year away from Starfleet has changed her, as she’s almost overwhelmed with joy to the point of tears as Tilly comments, she seems “lighter.”īurnham’s conflict in this episode is whether she wants to return to Starfleet or not while the rest of the crew want to make her captain by acclamation, she points out Saru led them through the wormhole, and that he deserves the command chair instead. Turns out, Burnham was alerted to Discovery‘s arrival when her communicator began pinging that the ship nearby. Michael’s taken up courier jobs with Booker to travel the galaxy, and uncover the reason behind the Burn, without success - but we do learn dilithium was already becoming scarce before the Burn, which we see a very brief, impressionistic depiction of, where every ship apparently stopped in front of each other before exploding. The cold open does a great job of balancing Burnham’s touching reunion with her crew with establishing what she’s been up to in the year since the season premiere, and more of the state of the galaxy in the 32nd century. Written by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt Unfortunately, the beacon message by Starfleet admiral Senna Tal turns out to painfully outdated, as Earth is no longer part of the Federation, and has fortified itself against raiders to protect their remaining dilithium. Happy Halloween, or Discovery (NCC-1031) Day! Michael Burnham’s been reunited with the rest of the crew, and now able to reach Earth, thanks to the ship’s spore drive. |
